Foot

I always check it the very first through observing the soles of their shoes where they have worn the most. My data suggests that a majority of modern homo sapiens distributes its body weight on its feet the wrong way. Today, the human foot is a complex structure of 26 bones, 33 joints and hundreds of muscles, tendons and ligaments. The main joints of the foot are…

A foot has three parts to it…

  • Hindfoot comprises ankle bone (talus) and heel bone (calcaneous). Ankle bone connects to tibia and fibula in the lower leg and forms ankle joint. At its other end, it connects  to heel bone and forms subtalar joint.
  • Midfoot has five bones, cuboid, navicular and three cuneiform bones from its arches, serving as a shock absorber. It’s connected to hind foot  and fore foot with muscles and plantar fascia, 
  • Forefoot comprises five toes and five proximal long bones forming metatarsus. Toe bones are called phalanges and make joints among them, named interphalangeal joints and with metatarsus, named metatarsophalangeal joints.

Knee

Bipedal KneeHuman knee joints have also evolved to support the increased body weight on two of them owing to bipedalism. The degree of knee extension, meaning the angle between the thigh and the shank in the walking cycle, has decreased. This change called double knee action reduces energy lost by vertical movement of the center of gravity. It enables homo sapiens to keep their knees straight right under the body improving its balance.

The knee joins the thigh and the leg with two joints, tibiofemoral joint connecting femur with tibia and patellofemoral joint connecting femur and patella. This modified hinge joint is the largest joint in the body. It very efficiently permits flexion and extension along with a limited internal and external rotation.

Like foot, people in general keep their knee joints faultily postured too, causing knee problems in their old age. Hence again, guided meditation for body centering at the body core becomes all the more necessary in this scenario.  

Limbs

Pelvic tilt is a movable postural orientation of the pelvis. It’s an orientation relative to thigh bones, knee joints and the soles of the feet below.  It also changes the orientation of the hip joint. When postured right, it subtly supports the weight of the vertebral column above while keeping its double S shape intact.

But that is just a description of the ideal pelvic orientation. A major chunk of the human population habitually keeps this pelvic tilt wrongly postured. There are two reasons for this unhealthy habit formation. The first one is the downward pull by gravity on its orientation. People give in to this constant downward pull when they lack enough life energy to keep its orientation up. They just let the front of their pelvis drop in relation to its back.

The newly acquired orientation named as  anterior pelvic tilt also disrupts the orientation of the hip joint. This further disrupts the double S shape of the vertebral column above.   • Anterior pelvic tilt drops the front of the pelvis relative to the back of the pelvis. It shortens the hip flexors and lengthens the hip extensors.
  • Posterior pelvic tilt raises the front of the pelvic relative to the back of the pelvis. It lengthens the hip flexors and shortens the hip extensors.
  • Lateral pelvic tilt happens when one keeps pelvis tilted to left or right habitually, resulting in scoliosis.
  • Left pelvic tilt keeps the right side of the pelvis raised more than the left sider.
  • Right pelvic tilt keeps the left side of the pelvis raised more than the right sider.

Tailbone vis-à-vis Root Chakra

Bipedal CoccyxPelvic tilt is the sole cause of a closed root chakra appearing at the lowest point, coccyx, of vertebral column. Coccyx lies very near the pelvic belt. And the pelvic tilt drops it down and pushes it forward in case it is anterior pelvic tilt. When the pelvic tilt is posterior, it still drops coccyx down but pushes it backward this time. Both the maneuvers sow the first seed of the closed chakras distorting the double S curve of the vertebral column. 

A closed root chakra also disrupts the anatomy and hence the physiology of the pelvis, hip and the lower limb. It disrupts pelvic, hip, knee, ankle and subtalar joints with interphalangeal articulations of feet and associated muscles, nerves and arteries.

As a result, the tail bone (coccyx) drops down as well as anteriorly forward or backward at the pelvis. The body weight distribution on hip, knees and soles of feet gets distorted centering its thrust on their wrong points. With the passage of time, one contracts knee pain, sciatica, varicose veins and constipation in case of anterior pelvic tilt. When it’s due to posterior pelvic tilt, constipation gets replaced with chronic loose motions.

It makes us feel ungrounded biologically as well as psychologically. Hence it keeps us perennially concerned with survival and material security in life. It turns us a miser who fears losing what little one have in case of anterior pelvic tilt. 

When it is due to posterior pelvic tilt, it turns us greedy and spendthrift who greedily accumulates a huge lot. It guarantees one it would never deplete even if a lot gets lost.

Vertebral Column

The vertebral column of the homo sapiens in its natural posture has a forward bend in its lumbar region. Above this it has a backward bend in its thoracic region. Without its forward bend in its lumbar region, the body would have kept leaning forward. In that case it would have needed a huge effort to stand upright.

The forward bend in the lumbar region and the backward bend in the thoracic region keep the body straight. They do so by keeping body’s center of gravity directly in line with its feet vertically.

The vertical column is what makes homo sapiens a vertebrate having a long chain of vertebrae separated by intervertebral discs. Their nomenclature is done by their region in the column and their position in their region. The vertebral column also has a spinal canal for housing the spinal cord.

There are 33 vertebrae in the vertebral column. The upper 24 of them are articulating and separated from one another by intervertebral discs. The lower 9 of them are fused in human adults, 5 in sacrum and 4 in coccyx or tailbone. Ligaments at the front, at the back and in between the vertebrae lengthen the vertebral column. These ligaments join the spinous processes, the transverse processes and the vertebral laminae.

Parts of Vertebrae

Atlas and axis are the topmost vertebrae in the cervical region supporting the head.

Vertebral body and vertebral arch are the two parts of a vertebra placed anteriorly and posteriorly respectively. The two parts in contact with each other enclose vertebral foramen through which the spinal cord passes.

The vertebral arch comprises two pedicles and two laminae. The arch performs seven processes out of which 4 are particular, 2 are transverse and one is spinous (aka  neural spine). The spinous process comes out the back and the two transverse processes come out one left and the other right. Vertebrae are joined by a thin portion of the neural arch called the pars interarticularis with facet joints allowing a restricted movement. Each pair of two vertebrae contain two small holes between them. These holes are named intervertebral foramina. Spinal nerves go out of the spinal cord to the organs through these holes.

Sacral Plexus vis-à-vis Sacral Chakra

Sacral PlexusA closed sacral chakra comes into existence when the nerves in the sacral plexus are under long-term compression. It takes place through dropping the sacral vertebrae down and thus distorting the lower S  of the double S shape of vertebral column.

Sacral plexus is a nerve plexus comprising sensory and motor nerves for pelvis (partly), posterior thigh, lower leg and foot. It originates at lumbar and sacral vertebrae namely L4 – S4. It’s a formation that comes to place by… 

  • Lumbosacral trunk
  • The anterior division of the first sacral nerve 
  • Parts of the anterior divisions of the 2nd and 3rd sacral nerves

The nerves of the sacral plexus meet at the greater sciatic foramen making a flattened band there. From here, new branches start turning into sciatic nerve ultimately splitting into tibial and fibular nerves in posterior thigh.

Sacral plexus is positioned at the back of pelvis and is fed by superior and inferior gluteal arteries and veins.

Constant compression of sacral plexus results in suppressing the aesthetic part of our instinctive structure. These include curiosity, creativity and most importantly the sexual drive and potency. In fact the roles of the root chakra and the sacral chakra are just the opposite of each other. The root chakra takes care of the basic survival and material safety or security. Conversely, the sacral chakra is concerned with whatever is beautiful in life and gives it a meaning to live. Its concerns including curiosity, creativity, sexual drive and potency fill joy and passion in the pursuits of life.

A constantly compressed sacral plexus afflicts the sexual process with various types of sexual dysfunctions. But once the compression is released through raising the sacral vertebrae up in the vertebral column, they start getting relieved. Pectoral Muscles vis-à-vis Heart Chakra

Innervated by lateral pectoral nerve (C5 – C7) and medial pectoral nerve (C8 – T1), pectoral muscles have two parts… 

  • Pectoralis major – flexes, extends and rotates humerus
  • Pectoralis minor – stabilizes the scapula

The first of them, i.e., pectoralis major is a thick, fan-shaped convergent muscle located in the chest. Its functions are flexion, extension and rotation of the humerus.

It performs four actions for the shoulder joint movement…

  • Flexion of the humerus like in heavy weight lifting while doing biceps curls
  • Adduction of the humerus like in arm-flapping
  • Rotating the humerus medially like in arm-wrestling
  • Keeping arms attached to torso like in military “attention” posture

Out of above four actions only second one keeps its associated vertebral upper S shape intact at C8 – T1 vertebrae. Same holds good for C5 – C7 vertebrae. The rest three tend to turn it to an inverted C shape. Also, when we stretch our body for relaxation, it performs the second action alone.

Hence it’s logical to deduce that the second action is the most relaxed state of the muscle. When we make it our first nature, it keeps heart chakra open for maximum duration of time throughout the day.

But when we keep it postured like in any of the rest three actions, it closes the heart chakra. It does so by turning the upper S shape of C8 – T1 vertebrae to an inverted C shape.

Pectoralis minor

Pectoralis minor is a thin, triangular muscle located in the upper chest under the pectoralis major muscle. It’s innervated by medial pectoral nerve (C8 – T1) alone.

Same is true about pectoralis minor to be kept postured for the second action to be able to stabilize scapulae.

  • Anterior (clavicular) – fibers assist pectoralis major to flex the shoulder.
  • Posterior (scapular) – fibers assist latissimus dorsi to extend the shoulder like in rowing movements.
  • Intermediate (acromial) – fibers perform shoulder abduction. 

Out of the above three, only the posterior or scapular fibers keep its associated vertebral upper S shape intact at C5 and C6 vertebrae. The rest two tend to turn it to an inverted C shape. Also, when we stretch our body for relaxation, the posterior fibers perform alone.

Hence it’s logical to deduce that the action by the posterior fibers is the most relaxed state of the muscle. When we make it our first nature, it keeps throat chakra open for maximum duration of time throughout the day.

But when we keep it postured like in action by the rest two fibers, it closes the throat chakra. It does so by turning the upper S shape of C5 – C6 vertebrae to an inverted C shape.

The action by posterior fibers is also the one that converges the top ends of scapulae closest to each other. It also aligns the collarbones along the neck turning it absolutely free to move in full 180 degrees. And that’s how an open throat chakra renders the head free on the neck ready to open the skull chakras.

An open throat chakra opens our way to intellect, intelligence and logical communication. But if it’s closed, it sets us in problems with our effective communication and logical comprehension. Once we have opened it via guided meditation for body centering at body core, we don’t need to look back!

Skull vis-à-vis Third Eye and Crown Chakras

The skull of homo sapiens is freely balanced on the vertebral column at its first vertebra named Atlas, coded C1. Occipital condyles maintain its balance dynamically.  Owing to this, head can be postured erect without the prominent supraorbital ridges and strong muscular attachments like in apes. As a result, occipitofrontalis (frontalis and occipitalis) muscles are only used for face expressions and for central fixation. The spinal cord as an extension of medulla oblongata enters the vertebral column through foramen magnum, an occipital bone opening.

Human brain size has also played a very big role in bipedalism driven evolution. It’s 3-4 times larger for its body size than that of its nearest evolutionary relative, chimpanzee.

The skull acts as a protective cavity for the brain. It houses the majority of the sense organs including eyes, ears, nose and tongue. It has two parts to it, the neurocranium and membraneous viscerocranium with the mandible as the latter’s largest bone. Numerous flat bones are fused together as sutures to give the skull its shape that it has in the humans. Mandible is the only major movable bone that engages with the neurocranium via temporomandibular joint.

In all, the skull has 22 bones in it. Out of these, eight are the cranial bones:

Temporomandibular Joints

Temporomandibular joints connect the jawbone to the skull at two points. It’s a bilateral synovial joint between temporal bone above and mandible below. Since it is bilateral, the left and the right parts always work together.

The joint comprises…

  • joint capsule
  • articular disc
  • mandibular condyles
  • articular surface of the temporal bone
  • temporomandibular ligament
  • stylomandibular ligament
  • sphenomandibular ligament
  • lateral pterygoid muscle 

The joint capsule is an envelope attaching to the mandibular fossa and the articular tubercle above. It’s also attached to the neck of the condyle of the mandible below.

The articular disc is a dense fibrocartilagenous tissue between condyle of the mandible and mandibular fossa.

Temporomandibular ligament is the thickened lateral portion of the capsule.stylomandibular ligament

Stylomandibular ligament becomes taut when the mandible is protruded.

Sphenomandibular ligament becomes accentuated and taut when the mandible is protruded.

Present Status

When are the Temporomandibular joints with all their muscles along in the state of rest? Surprisingly, it’s not with the teeth biting together but with a 2 mm to 4 mm of space between them.

But at this juncture of evolution, we, homo sapiens, have not yet been able to make it our first nature. Hence we do need to correct it with guided meditation for body centering at body core immediately.

Full jaw opening measures 40 mm to 50 mm gap between the upper and lower front teeth. When the jaw moves, it’s only the mandible that moves.

Mandible movements are called excursions. There are two lateral excursions, left and right. And there is a forward excursion called protrusion that everyone does everyday while brushing the teeth. It’s because protrusion brings the upper and the lower  dentures in one single plane to brush them together easily. The excursion opposite to protrusion is called retrusion.

Blurred eyesight is certainly a lifestyle disease. It has been an epidemic throughout the world since the beginning of bipedalism. Almost everyone falls prey to it, some of them early in life and the rest after the age of 40. We don’t really bother much about it since the use of specs has almost become a lifestyle disease! It has turned from a lifestyle disease to an accepted lifestyle! But we aren’t aware that a blurred eyesight isn’t the end point of the epidemic. It turns us prone to be contracting various different kinds of other lifestyle diseases in time to come.

LASIKGoing for a surgical option like LASIK doesn’t reduce the proneness either. It’s because LASIK just creates another pair of specs in the cornea of our eyes surgically and does nothing else. Why to go for LASIK when can easily see clear via guided meditation for body centering at body core?

If their distant vision is 20/20, central fixation can enhance it to be something like 30/20. Same with the near vision! If the near sight measures N6, they can easily enhance it to N3 or even more. Hence when mandible is maneuvered, Temporomandibular joints get maneuvered along.

When are the Temporomandibular joint, with all their muscles along, in the state of rest? It’s not with molars biting together with the front teeth in the upper denture covering those in the lower one. It’s so with a 2 mm to 4 mm of space between the two entire dentures postured in one single plane. But almost no one ever postures them that way. That’s one of the postural faults humanity has habitually been living all over the world with, to date.

The said postural maneuver aligns the upper and the lower dentures in one single plane along their entire lengths. It results in opening third eye chakra and crown chakra in one single go through maneuvering frontalis and temporalis along. 

Muscles Associated with Temporomandibular Joints

Now, which are all the muscles associated with Temporomandibular joints? I said associated, not necessarily attached to the joint!. The muscles directly attached are the agonist or the prime movers. But there are many more in the vicinity that synergistically associate with the same action. They assist the prime movers by imparting an extra punch to their action with their associated actions. The said actions may either be contracting a muscle or else releasing an already habitually contracted muscle to rest.

  • Temporalis Muscle – elevates and retracts mandible
  • Masseter Muscle – elevates and retracts mandible
  • Medial Pterigoid Muscle – depresses mandible
  • Medial Pterigoid Muscle – elevates mandible and helps lateral pterygoid in moving jaw from side to side

The synergetically associated muscles of the eyes are…

  • Occipitofrontalis Muscle – raises eyebrows
  • Occipitalis Muscle -retracts scalp
  • Frontalis Muscle – wrinkles eyebrow
  • Orbicularis Oculi Muscle – closes eyelids
  • Corrugator Supercilii Muscle – moves skin of forehead medially and inferiorly towards root of nose
  • Depressor Supercilii Muscle – moves skin of eyebrows inferiorly
  • Levator Palpebrae Superioris Muscle – retracts and elevates eyelids
  • Superior Tarsal Muscle – raises upper eyelid
  • Superior Rectus Muscle – elevates, adducts and medially rotates eye
  • Inferior Rectus Muscle – depresses and adducts eye
  • Medial Rectus Muscle – adducts eye
  • Lateral Rectus Muscle – abducts eye
  • Superior Oblique Muscle – introits, abducts and depresses eye
  • Inferior Oblique Muscle – extorts, elevates and abducts eye

  • Temporoparietalis Muscle – used in reconstructive ear surgery
  • Anterior Auricular Muscle – pulls auricle forwards
  • Superior Auricular Muscle – pulls auricle upwards
  • Posterior Auricular Muscle – pulls auricle backwards
  • Stapedius Muscle – controls amplitude of sound waves to inner ear
  • Tensor Tympani Muscle – tenses tympanic membrane

  • Procerus Muscle – draws down medial angle of eyebrow giving expressions of frowning

But the entire maneuver is extremely subtle and complex. It’s owing to an emergent need to balance the actions of the prime mover and synergetic muscular actions.

But that’s only possible when the rest six are already open. Otherwise they would just do the opposite in the long run. They would rather tend to pull back the action taken to open that one single chakra, later.

So, it’s never a wise decision to open them singly, one by one, sequentially. The best bet is to open them all in one single go. We cannot effectively empty a segment of our mind and hope that it will always remain so. Corruptions of mind from its other parts would rush to fill the empty space later if not sooner. How long will we be able to keep it protected from its offenders? But if the entire mind goes empty in one single go, it would tend to remain empty forever.

Third Eye Chakra Vs Crown Chakra

An open third eye chakra is characterized by a sharp perception which a closed third eye chakra badly missed. Similarly an open crown chakra is characterized by a deep insight into life which a closed crown chakra pathetically misses. 

In fact the two of them are very similar to each other with only one difference between them. An open crown chakra can see macro view of what an open third eye chakra can see only micro version. In other words, what an open third eye chakra can see in one single degree, crown chakra does in 270.

Why Crown Chakra Is The King of All Chakras

In fact, as I discovered, there are two types of visual central fixation possible. One associates with an open third eye chakra alone providing a crystal clear, bright and sharp tunnel vision aka perception. It’s achieved by relaxing the frontalis muscle while accommodating with the help of occipitalis. Everything out of this tunnel is blurred and dull in the sense of not being bright. 

The other associates with both, an open crown chakra along with an open third eye chakra. This central fixation provides a crystal clear, bright, sharp wide vision including peripheral vision, perception as well as empathy. We do it by relaxing both, the frontalis and the temporalis muscles while accommodating with the help of occipitalis. In my personal opinion, this has been my biggest discovery in chakra discipline.

Also, the sharpness of the eyesight is closely linked with insight into life. A sharp perception of brain must have a recording tool of sharp eyes to perceive it in its entirety. It’s exactly like a clear eye vision imparts a clear world vision too. The eyes are the real windows not only to the mind but also to the brain!    

That’s why third eye chakra has been assigned two iconic petals whereas crown chakra has been assigned full one thousand! And that is why the crown chakra is called the king of all chakras. 

There is a caveat here. Crown chakra cannot be effectively opened unless third eye chakra is already opened.
